Iron Oxide-Based Catalysts
Iron Oxide-Based Catalysts by B.F.S
Robust, Cost-Effective Catalysts for Oxidation, Reforming, and Environmental Applications
Iron oxide-based catalysts are widely used in industrial processes that demand thermal stability, redox capability, and economic efficiency. At B.F.S, we manufacture and supply engineered Fe₂O₃ and Fe₃O₄-based catalysts, available in standalone and supported formulations, optimized for hydrogen production, pollution control, ammonia synthesis, and more. Why Iron Oxide?
Iron oxides, especially hematite (Fe₂O₃) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄), exhibit excellent catalytic behavior due to:- 🔁 Reversible redox properties (Fe³⁺ ⇌ Fe²⁺)
- 🔥 High thermal stability under reducing or oxidizing environments
- 💰 Low cost and natural abundance
- 🌱 Environmentally friendly profile
- 📈 High activity when promoted with other metals (e.g., Cu, K, Cr, Zn)
Key Applications
1. Hydrogen Production (Steam Reforming & Water-Gas Shift)
Iron oxide catalysts promoted with chromium or copper are used in:- High-Temperature Shift (HTS): Fe₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ catalysts convert CO + H₂O → CO₂ + H₂ efficiently
- Pre-reforming of hydrocarbons
2. Ammonia Synthesis
- Iron catalysts (often magnetite-based and promoted with K₂O, Al₂O₃, or CaO) are used in the Haber-Bosch process to produce NH₃ from N₂ and H₂.
3. Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis
- Iron-based catalysts (Fe/Cu/K) are employed for syngas conversion to liquid hydrocarbons and waxes, especially when using CO-rich feeds from coal gasification.
4. Environmental Catalysis
- Oxidation of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- Decomposition of nitrous oxide (N₂O)
- Catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) for wastewater treatment
5. Desulfurization & Gas Purification
- Used in sulfur guard beds and arsenic removal systems as a reactive scavenger.
